The SEKT member York Sure from the Institute AIFB at University of Karlsruhe has been awarded with the highly competitive IBM UIMA Award 2006.

The IBM 2006 Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) Innovation Award program is an international award competition designed to encourage the use of open source and open standards-based tools for academic curricula and research.

According to IBM the UIMA framework supports the hard work of advancing the state-of-the-art in Natural Language Processing and more generally algorithms for unstructured information (text, audio, video) analysis, in real-world settings and on configurations ranging from stand-alone laptop computers to large clusters of servers.

"UIMA will largely benefit from ontology infrastructure technology developed in SEKT", says York, who is leading the work of the Institute AIFB in the SEKT project. He and his team are working mainly on ontology infrastructure technologies with the aim to facilitate as much as possible the creation and maintenance of ontologies.
